Why join a pharmacy technician professional organization such as SEPhT?

Being a part of a pharmacy technician organization is a great way to stay up to date on what is going on in your profession.  SEPhT is founded by pharmacy technicians who have worked in the field and now teach in a classroom. They understand the day to day activities of technicians and the urgent need for providing opportunities for advancement in your field. An organization should promote the career by offering useful and practical information, advanced training opportunities, and continued education.  Being a member of a pharmacy technician organization is also a great networking tool.  Today’s world requires easy access to information and the SEPhT website provides a user friendly a one stop place to find information. 

Why should I sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board national exam?

Becoming a Certified Pharmacy Technician is a great accomplishment for all career pharmacy technicians.  Certification demonstrates to employers and the pharmaceutical Industry as a whole, that you pose a minimum level of knowledge of the pharmacy technician didactic knowledge. Certified pharmacy technicians can have a direct impact on medication and patient safety. Advancing your knowledge through advanced education means higher salaries and better career opportunities in the future.

If I do not plan on working in the clinical setting, why should I take an exam where I am tested in an area I never plan on working in?

Pharmacy Technicians who successfully pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam may use the designation "CPhT" after their name. Our role as pharmacy technicians has evolved into many critical areas of the pharmaceutical industry. Certified Pharmacy Technicians poses the knowledge to work more effectively with pharmacist to bring greater patient care.  Employers now recognized certification for the pharmacy technician and pharmacy technicians are now reporting higher wages and promotion opportunities. A well rounded knowledge will enable you to advance in your career later on.   

Do I need to have only ACPE accredited CE’s to renew my certification?

No, Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accreditation is not mandatory for attended programs for pharmacy technicians to receive continuing education credit.

How many units do I need to renew my certification?

To recertify, you must earn a minimum of twenty contact hours of continuing education in pharmacy-related topics. At least one of the twenty hours must be in pharmacy law.

What is ASHP/ACPE?

The American Society for Heath-Systems Pharmacist is association that represents pharmacists who practice in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, long-term care facilities, home care, and other areas of health care systems. Many states have a local affiliation where pharmacy technicians can also get involved in promoting continued education, advanced training and certification of pharmacy technicians.

ASHP and ACPE (The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education) is a national collaboration that accredits pharmacy education and training programs in the US. Accredited technician training programs follow standards from the Model Curriculum which contains a specific set of goals for pharmacy technician training.
